Calgary, AB T2C-2E1 Granite![]() View the Granite Edge Profile Granite is a completely natural product formed by geological processes over millions of years. The term "granite" is used by the stone industry to describe a variety of very hard stones. Technically, some material classified as granite by the stone industry is not considered granite by the geological world. For example, sedimentary stone such as Kashmir White is not granite even though the stone industry classifies it as one. This is the case since sedimentary stones and granites have similar hardness levels and are formed by geological process. Where as marble and limestone for instance, are comprised of dead organic matters that has been compressed and crystallized over millions of years. The high level of durability in granite is determined by its hardness. The hardness of granite lies between six and eight with diamond being ten. Marble, for comparison, has a hardness of between two and three. Due to its natural origins, granite is subject to a range of variation in texture, color, and crystal structure. No two pieces are exactly the same. Book matched slabs, or slabs cut consecutively from the same block, will have differences but the coloration and texture will be consistent. Slabs may differ from samples with variations in inclusions, and approved by the customer. In general, the variation and uniqueness of granite is looked upon as one of its many desirable characteristics. This should be emphasized and the customer must realize they are getting a unique material. Granite is quarried around the world. Extracted in the form of 20-ton blocks. It is cut and polished into slabs, which are in turn dimensionally cut for countertops. The high gloss polish is accomplished by using large polishing machines. The size of an average finished slab is 8 ½’ – 91/2’ x 4 ½’ – 5 ½’ feet. Granite can withstand heat and its hardness provides it with a high level of scratch resistance. The hardness of granite requires the use of diamond impregnated, high - speed tooling cooled by water. Its unforgiving nature requires the skill of an experienced craftsmen, and sufficient time to create a high quality finish. Granite is a very high end product and is usually the main attraction of a home or business space. It is not indestructible and requires some care and maintenance. Links worth looking at:
